Stefanie's Corner

The majority of most kids wish they could be doctors, astronauts, or even a pro athlete.  As they grow older, their ideas become more realistic.  Some still become who they once wanted to be, others live there lives as normal families do.  As I was little I didn’t play many sports, missed out on birthday parties, and was even labeled a tomboy.  I was doing something that no girl would think about doing….Playin in the mud.  My life then and now revolves around racing.  I’ve missed best friend’s weddings, funerals, special family events.  Heck, I even had to plan my wedding and honeymoon around racing.  But what is normal??  To me I’m pretty normal when it comes to everyday life.  You know bills, laundry, a mortgage, and car payments.  When I walk into the grocery store nobody stares or talks about me (or at least I hope not..lol) but when I’m at a racing event, I’m somebody.  It definitely hasn’t’ been easy all these years being a female racer.  I’ve had people try to protest me saying “Girls can’t race with guys” or try to say I’ve cheated just because I beat them.  You don’t see too much of it now because I’ve been around so long, and other fast women have come into the picture.  It’s been a constant battle.  Little do they know, it gives me more of a reason to come back and beat them again.

Which brings me to the answer of many questions, what drives me to want to be number one? To be #1 is not only a great achievement but a life long personal goal.  I want to prove to myself I can do it!  To show up all those so called “Men” that once said girls can’t.  To thank all the fans, friends, family and sponsors who helped and believed in me all these years.  Without them I definitely wouldn’t be here today!

Who would have thought 10 years ago beautiful talented women can beat guys in a predominately male sport.  Well, we are here, and more are coming.  All men aren’t going to like it.  But that’s just it, they don’t have to.  We are here and we aren’t going anywhere!!

“The will to win is overrated in athletics, because everyone wants to win.  It’s the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.” – Bobby Knight
